Hi, my name is Patrick Arnold and I live with my wonderful wife and daughter in a little town in South-Western Illinois just outside of St. Louis, MO. I've been a professional advertising photographer for about thirty years but like many commercial shooters, my passion has always been art photography.
This site showcases some of my favorite personal work. It includes SX-70 Polaroid manipulations, Diana camera (toy camera) images, some digital photography constructions as well as quite a bit of straight color and black & white photography. I’ve even thrown in a gallery of my grandparent’s family slides just because they have a wonderful folk-like aesthetic that I’ve loved as long as I can remember.
My work doesn't feature much social or political commentary, deep emotionalism or esoteric statements on the human condition, although I can appreciate that those elements are important to the larger world of fine art and culture.
My personal aesthetic is more about very deliberate compositional structure, mood, light, texture and form; an indulgence of my compulsion to organize everything I see into balanced compositions as I explore the world around me.
My subjects are whatever catches my eye, but very rarely are they people. I have a sort of melancholy sentimentality for small towns and rural settings that reference back to some personal history, and a distinct taste for visual irony when I can find it. I respond primarily to the simple quiet energy in things and scenes that may otherwise go unnoticed; elemental relationships that don’t exist until they are forced to interact with the frame I impose around them. To quote one of my favorite photographers, Garry Winogrand, “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.”
Thanks for taking the time to check out my work, I hope you enjoy what you see. If you see something you’d like to purchase please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org for size and format options and prices.
